What Now?
Message from Acting Director

Predictably, despite the tireless efforts of volunteers and other supporters in several Kansas advocacy groups, medical cannabis legislation did not advance out of committee in either the House or the Senate during the 2012 Kansas Legislative Session, which is virtually ending as this is being written.

As Acting Director of the Kansas Medical Cannabis Network (medcankan), I see the upcoming lull in political activity in Topeka as the perfect opportunity to further raise awareness of the medical cannabis/marijuana issue among Kansas voters. We have a span of several months--basically over the summer and on through the November election--to enlighten and inform as many Kansas voters as we possibly can.

Fortunately, we know how to do that. We have knowledgeable speakers ready and willing to get out and talk to groups of likely voters around the state.

(This is how the highly-respected advocacy group, Law Enforcement Against Prohibition [LEAP] built itself into the powerful force it is today. I know this because as a volunteer during their formative years my primary task was to research and compile contact data for organizations that might be willing to listen to LEAP's controversial message. How to Help
Suggestions from Volunteer Coordinator

Everyone who supports our mission on behalf of Kansas patients and their loved ones, and/or wants to help with it is very important to us. Here are a few suggestions from Phil, our Volunteer Coordinator, as to how to become involved at your level of personal comfort:

IMPORTANT: If you are afraid to contact your legislators about your need of medical cannabis, please do not worry about legal repercussions. As of this writing, it is legal to exchange information and to advocate for changes to the law; we cannot be prosecuted for doing so if we are obeying all local laws and ordinances.

Basic supporters:

  • Allow publication of your name as a supporter and be counted. (You may be listed and counted anonymously if preferred, but your published name packs a bigger punch with legislators)
  • Help with recruiting: Encourage others to join, or to visit this website and then decide for themselves where they stand on medical marijuana. Start the conversation in your community.

    One step further:

  • Identify your legislators and inform them of your support for medical cannabis/marijuana and this organization
  • Inquire as to your representative's position and reasoning for his/her stance
  • Contact your lawmakers via email, snail mail, or phone (calling is preferred by most legislators)
  • Stay current with our website, newsletter, and/or facebook education page
  • Please donate, if you can, via the PayPal link on our home page. We are working out of our own pockets and there aren't very many of us yet.

    Two steps further:

  • Area coordinators (serve as "go-to" for your geographical region)
  • Attend political gatherings and ask relevant questions
  • Seek out and submit information on upcoming events in your area
  • Contact your representatives frequently; develop a relationship with them. They are there to serve YOU!
  • Attend events and rallies--being seen and heard could not be important, and is easier than you might expect

Three steps further: (in no particular order)

  • Assist Volunteer Coordinator: volunteers@medcankan.org or impatientpatient@yahoo.com
  • Newsletter assistance-submit items for publication; distribute hard copies in your area
  • Seek speaker venues: research and compile contact data for speaker bookers
  • Participate on facebook page and post current or coming events
  • Enroll as a patient speaker-we NEED you to tell your story to voters!
  • Fundraising, all aspects
  • Event planning and promotion
  • Website collaborator(s)

    Special skills:
  • Advertising
  • Communications
  • IT skills
  • Marketing
  • Political experience
  • Public relations

If you have been blessed with any of these skills and would like to join our mission to help seriously ill Kansans and their loved ones, please get in touch with our volunteer coordinator, Phil, at impatientpatient@yahoo.com, or

    Take Action NOW to End
    FEDERAL MARIJUANA PROHIBITION!
From our friends at the Drug Policy Alliance: Right now a bill is sitting in Congress that could end federal marijuana prohibition and protect the ability of states to make their own marijuana laws without federal interference. Please urge your legislators to end the federal war on marijuana!

Federal Persecution of Medical Marijuana and Patients Continues
Reneging on its February 2009 promise to end federal prosecution of medical cannabis dispensaries and patients, the Obama administration has instead increased federal raids. Before we can expect to have any hope of success in our mission, federal law governing medical cannabis must be changed--beginning with the 'rescheduling' of cannabis/marijuana. Under the Controlled Substance Act of 1970, the DEA (Drug Enforcement Administration) has established a rating system.

This ''Schedule' designates every drug's relative safety and risk of abuse, with Schedule I being the most dangerous substances.

These drugs are considered by our federal government to have no known medical use. Heroin is on Schedule I. So is cannabis/marijuana.

Schedule II lists cocaine and methamphetamine as substances having limited medical value. By this logic, cannabis/marijuana is considered to be more dangerous than cocaine and methamphetamine!

Schedule I drugs are totally banned and cannot be prescribed at all, while far more dangerous drugs are legally available at every pharmacy.
